Which Lightsphere® is best for any given setting is as much a matter of photographer preference and loyalty as anything. Many pros carry both styles in their gear bag for varying lighting situations.
Both Lightspheres® provide excellent diffusion and studio quality light from your on-camera flash. Both are made of flexible, premium grade vinyl and include the inverted dome made of hard, translucent plastic.
The Lightsphere® II is made of soft, transparent vinyl, and currently comes in two colors: CLEAR and CLOUD.
The Lightsphere II-Clear: This diffuser was designed with the photojournalist in mind. The LS-Clear is a very translucent and highly efficient diffuser. Since it allows more light to pass through, your flash batteries don’t have to work as hard for a proper exposure, allowing you to keep up with the action. Many of our clients also use the Clear with commercial product photography in place of umbrellas and soft boxes. The color temperature transmitted by the Clear is true to your flash, and consequently puts off a cooler (more neutral) light. The versatility of the Clear makes it ideal for a wide range of events. By dialing down your flash, the Clear can be used purely as a fill light, allowing your camera to capture more shadow detail while not making your image look like it was lit by a flash.
The Lightsphere II-Cloud: This diffuser was designed for portrait and wedding photographers. The LS-Cloud generates the softest light on the market, ideal for capturing skin tones and softening harsh shadows. The best part is you don’t have to use a bracket! Both the LS-Cloud and Clear enable you to quickly switch to vertical mode and eliminates the need for carrying extra equipment. Side shadows will be greatly reduced, if not eliminated by the wraparound light, giving great depth to your portraits. Taking group shots has never been easier, as the Lightsphere Cloud produces generous amounts of soft light that will spread across your entire subject range. Even if the location is dimly lit, the Lightsphere Cloud will fill a scene with pleasing studio quality light. Your subjects will appreciate the look of beautiful warm light, and you will appreciate how easy it will be to process your images.
